John Martin completed this dramatic landscape featuring a castle amid sublime natural scenery. Mountains and valleys stretch toward the horizon under theatrical light. Martin was famous for apocalyptic biblical scenes, but also created atmospheric landscapes of similar grandeur.
His Romantic vision emphasized nature's power over human constructions. The tiny castle is dwarfed by the surrounding landscape. Displayed at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven.
