John Constable executed this scene of the Suffolk countryside near his childhood home. A country lane winds through lush summer foliage, with glimpses of sky visible through the trees. The composition captures the English landscape with the freshness and naturalism that became Constable's hallmark.
Constable grew up in Dedham Vale, on the border of Suffolk and Essex, and painted its scenery throughout his career. "These scenes made me a painter," he wrote. The work demonstrates his direct observation of nature, painted outdoors to capture authentic effects of light and atmosphere. It's now at the Yale Center for British Art.
