Lucas Cranach the Elder rendered this portrait of Christoph von Scheurl, a German humanist and lawyer. The composition captures the sitter's intellectual bearing with the precise detail characteristic of German Renaissance portraiture.
Cranach was court painter to the Saxon electors and friend of Martin Luther. His portraits document the leading figures of the Reformation era. The work is at the Cranach-Höfe in Wittenberg.
