Paul Cézanne painted the portrait of his father Louis-Auguste, a wealthy banker who initially opposed his son's artistic career. The composition shows the elder Cézanne reading a newspaper with solid, structural form.
Despite early conflict, Cézanne's father eventually supported him financially. This early portrait demonstrates Cézanne's developing approach to form. It hangs at the National Gallery in London.
