Peter Paul Rubens painted the Duke of Lerma mounted on a powerful horse. The Spanish nobleman was the most powerful man in Spain as favorite of Philip III. Rubens created this during his diplomatic mission to Spain.
The portrait established Rubens's reputation for dynamic equestrian compositions. This work hangs at the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
