The Albertina was founded in 1805 by Duke Albert Casimir of Teschen, who brought his graphics collection from Brussels to Vienna. The collection was formally renamed the Albertina in 1921 after Austria's government took over the property.
The museum's print room holds roughly 65,000 drawings and a million old master prints, anchored by three works from Albrecht Dürer: Young Hare (1502), a closely observed watercolor study; The Great Piece of Turf (1503), an equally precise study of wild grasses; and Praying Hands (1508), a preparatory drawing for an altarpiece.
Today the Albertina is among the most visited art museums in the world, drawing more than a million visitors a year, and has since added Albertina Modern (2020) and Albertina Klosterneuburg (2024) for 20th and 21st-century art.
