The Lenbachhaus opened in 1929 in the former villa of painter Franz von Lenbach, a lavish Italianate residence built in the 1880s. The museum gained international significance when Gabriele Münter donated over 1,000 works in 1957, including paintings by her partner Wassily Kandinsky and fellow members of the Blue Rider movement. This gift transformed the Lenbachhaus into the world's foremost collection of German Expressionism.
The collection traces the development of Expressionism through works by Franz Marc, August Macke, and Alexej von Jawlensky. Kandinsky's progression toward abstraction unfolds across multiple galleries, from early figurative landscapes to his breakthrough non-representational paintings. A striking extension by Foster + Partners opened in 2013, nearly tripling exhibition space while preserving the historic villa at its core. The subterranean galleries house contemporary installations, and visitors can see Joseph Beuys' environmental artwork Show Your Wound.
