The Neue Pinakothek in Munich opened in 1853 as Europe's first public museum dedicated to contemporary art. King Ludwig I of Bavaria founded it to complement his Old Masters gallery across the street, creating a dialogue between historical and modern painting. Ludwig's personal taste shaped the early collection, favoring German Romanticism and the Munich School. The museum director Hugo von Tschudi added Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces between 1905 and 1914, transforming the collection's scope.
World War II bombing destroyed the original building, and the current structure by architect Alexander von Branca opened in 1981. About 400 paintings and 50 sculptures trace European art from 1750 to 1900. Caspar David Friedrich's contemplative landscapes, Arnold Böcklin's symbolist visions, and Franz von Stuck's dramatic The Sin represent German painting. Max Liebermann's sun-dappled scenes brought German Impressionism into the collection. The museum is currently closed for renovation until 2029; a selection of masterpieces is displayed at the Alte Pinakothek and Sammlung Schack.
