The Naples National Archaeological Museum was founded in 1777 around the Farnese Collection, a trove of Roman antiquities inherited by the Bourbon kings of Naples. It later absorbed artifacts excavated from Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
The Farnese holdings include the Farnese Bull, widely considered the largest single sculpture to survive from antiquity, and the Farnese Hercules, a Roman copy after a lost bronze by Lysippos that shaped how later artists depicted the hero.
The Farnese Atlas, a Roman marble showing the titan supporting a celestial globe, is also part of the collection, which additionally holds one of Italy's largest Egyptian collections, with roughly 2,500 objects.

Before. The most important Pompeii artifacts (mosaics, frescoes, sculptures) were moved here for preservation. Seeing them first helps you understand what the empty spaces at Pompeii once contained.
A collection of erotic art from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Once restricted to men of "mature age and respected morals," it's now open to all visitors. The Romans had relaxed attitudes about sexuality.
At least 3 hours, ideally 4. The Farnese sculptures, Pompeii mosaics, and Roman artifacts could each take an hour. It's one of the world's great museums, don't rush.
