Palazzo Massimo alle Terme

Palazzo Massimo alle Terme opened its ground floor to the public in 1995, with the upper floors and basement completing the museum by 1998. Part of the National Roman Museum system, it houses ancient Roman art from the late Republic through late antiquity, including portraiture, mosaics, and coins.

Its best-known sculpture is the Boxer at Rest, a bronze attributed to the ancient Greek sculptor Lysippos or his workshop, dated to the second half of the 4th century BCE. Workers uncovered it on Rome's Quirinal Hill in 1885, and its raw, battle-worn face makes it one of the most naturalistic figures to survive from the Hellenistic period.

The museum's basement holds a well-preserved collection of Roman frescoes and mosaics, including wall paintings lifted intact from villas around the city, giving visitors a rare look at how wealthy Romans decorated their homes.
