The Museo di Capodimonte occupies an 18th-century Bourbon palazzo on a hilltop above Naples. King Charles VII began building it in 1738 to house both his court and the Farnese Collection he inherited from his mother, and the museum opened to the public in 1757. The building reached its current museum form in 1957.
Capodimonte is considered the leading repository of Neapolitan painting, with works spanning the 13th through 18th centuries. Highlights include Titian's Danaë and Pope Paul III and His Grandsons, plus Caravaggio's Flagellation of Christ.
Earlier holdings include Masaccio's Crucifixion and Giovanni Bellini's Transfiguration, alongside Parmigianino's portrait Antea. The ground floor displays monumental Roman sculpture from the original Farnese Collection, and later galleries cover the Neapolitan School painters who shaped the city's art for centuries.
