Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia

The Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia began as a municipal museum in 1882, though the building that houses it today, the Palazzo Piacentini, wasn't finished until 1941. It documents Magna Graecia, the Greek colonies that once covered southern Italy, through pottery, temple fragments, and architectural terracottas.

Its most celebrated pieces are the Riace Warrior A and Riace Warrior B, two full-size bronze nudes pulled from the sea near Riace in 1972. Cast by ancient Greek sculptors in the 5th century BCE, they are among the only surviving large bronzes from that period, most others having been melted down long ago. Recent scholarship suggests the pair may represent Tydeus and Amphiaraus from a larger sculptural group depicting the Seven Against Thebes.

An underwater archaeology gallery, added in 1981 after the bronzes' discovery, displays related shipwreck finds and gives the statues' recovery its own historical context.
