by Viktor Vasnetsov, 1898
Viktor Vasnetsov painted the monumental 1898 canvas showing three legendary Russian knights, or bogatyrs. Ilya Muromets, Dobrynya Nikitich, and Alyosha Popovich sit on powerful horses, surveying the steppe. Each hero represents different virtues: strength, wisdom, and cleverness.
The painting measures an impressive 295 × 446 cm, created in oil on canvas. Vasnetsov spent over a decade perfecting this celebration of Russian folklore. It hangs at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
