by Caravaggio
Italian artist Caravaggio painted this still life of a basket of fruit with radical naturalistic detail, including imperfect and decaying fruit. The work heightened still life to a subject worthy of serious attention.
This is one of the earliest pure still life paintings in Italian art. It hangs at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan.
