This painting by Eugène Delacroix portrait around 1821-24, depicting a woman of mixed race with directness and dignity. She meets the viewer's gaze steadily, her partially exposed chest rendered with the warm flesh tones Delacroix admired in Rubens.
It is also known as "Portrait of Aspasie," though little is known about the sitter. Delacroix's treatment avoids the exoticism common in such subjects, presenting a striking individual rather than a type. The work demonstrates his interest in diverse subjects and rich color harmonies. It hangs at the Musée Fabre in Montpellier.
