François Boucher executed this portrait of Carl Gustaf Tessin around 1740, depicting the Swedish diplomat and art collector in an elegant, relaxed pose. Tessin wears a sumptuous silk robe with lace and gold accents, his gentle wig curls reflecting period fashion. He holds what appears to be a sheet with illustrations, suggesting his engagement with intellectual or artistic pursuits.
Carl Gustaf Tessin (1695-1770) served as Swedish ambassador to France and was instrumental in bringing French Rococo taste to Sweden. He assembled an impressive art collection and maintained close relationships with leading French artists. This portrait reflects both his social status and his role as a cultural intermediary between France and Scandinavia.
Boucher's skill as a portraitist shows in the detailed rendering of textures, from the shimmering fabric to the delicate lace cuffs. The warm color palette and soft modeling of forms are characteristic of Rococo style. The painting hangs at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
