by Franz Marc
Franz Marc executed this poignant image of a dead sparrow, treating the small bird with the same spiritual significance he gave to larger animals. The expressionist colors transform the simple subject into a meditation on life and death. Marc believed animals possessed a purity that humans had lost.
Marc was a founder of the Blue Rider group and developed a symbolic color theory. His bold palette and emotional intensity mark this as a mature Expressionist work. The painting remains in a private collection.
