Frédéric Bazille completed this view of the famous forest where many Impressionists worked outdoors. The composition captures dappled light through trees with the fresh observation that characterized early Impressionism.

Fontainebleau was a gathering place for artists seeking to paint nature directly. Bazille worked alongside Monet and Renoir there. It hangs at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
