Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted his friend Frédéric Bazille at work on a canvas showing a heron. The composition captures the intimate camaraderie of young artists working together, with soft light filling Bazille's studio.
Renoir and Bazille were close friends who shared studios and subjects. Bazille's death in the Franco-Prussian War cut short a promising career. It hangs at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
