Christ Before the High Priest

Circa 1617, Gerard van Honthorst painted this night scene of Christ interrogated by the high priest Caiaphas. A single candle illuminates the figures with the dramatic lighting that earned Honthorst the nickname "Gherardo delle Notti."

Honthorst was a Dutch follower of Caravaggio, famous for nocturnal scenes lit by candles or torches. His work influenced painting across Europe. It hangs at the National Gallery in London.
