by Gustav Klimt
Gustav Klimt created the Idylle as part of his early decorative work, before developing the golden style that would make him famous. The allegorical scene shows an idealized pastoral vision reflecting the classical education valued in late nineteenth-century Vienna.
Klimt began as an architectural decorator before emerging as a leader of the Vienna Secession and Symbolism. This earlier work shows his academic training and facility with traditional subjects. It hangs at the Vienna Museum, documenting his artistic development.
