French artist Théodore Géricault created this preparatory study for a larger composition depicting the famous riderless horse race in Rome. Powerful horses strain at the start, held by grooms before release down the Corso. Géricault was obsessed with horses and their muscular energy.
This study shows Géricault's Romantic interest in raw animal power and dramatic movement. The Roman horse races fascinated many artists visiting Italy. Displayed at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, France.
