Valentin Serov completed this scene of bullocks in a Russian landscape. The sturdy animals are rendered with naturalistic precision against a muted sky. Serov, best known for portraits, here showed his skill with rural subjects.
The Russian painter's loose brushwork and truthful observation influenced generations of artists. This work hangs at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
