The Portland Art Museum was incorporated in 1892 as the Portland Art Association, making it one of the earliest art institutions on the West Coast. Its permanent collection has grown to more than 50,000 works across 112,000 square feet of gallery space.

Claude Monet is represented by two paintings, Waterlilies (1914) and the earlier Poplars on the Epte (1891). The museum also holds Vincent van Gogh's The Ox-Cart, painted in 1884 before van Gogh moved to Paris.

Beyond European painting, the museum's Grand Ronde Center for Native American Art and the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Center for Northwest Art give the collection a strong regional identity alongside its Impressionist holdings.

Visiting Portland Art Museum

The Portland Art Museum offers free admission on the First Thursday of every month from 5-8 PM. Oregon Trail Card (EBT) holders receive free admission anytime for themselves and up to three guests. Children 17 and under are always free.

Claude Monet's Waterlilies (1914) is the most celebrated work in the collection. The museum also owns Van Gogh's The Ox-Cart and displays works by Portland native Mark Rothko through a long-term agreement extending to 2045.

The Rothko Pavilion opened in 2025 as part of a major expansion, adding 100,000 square feet of gallery space. Named after abstract expressionist Mark Rothko who grew up in Portland, it connects the two museum buildings.
