The Seattle Asian Art Museum occupies the original 1933 home of the Seattle Art Museum, an Art Deco building designed by Carl F. Gould. When the main museum moved downtown in 1991, the building reopened in 1994 as a dedicated Asian art museum, and it underwent a $56 million renovation completed in 2020.
The permanent galleries present historic and contemporary art from China, Korea, Japan, India, the Himalayas, and Southeast Asia, organized around themes like spirituality and nature. Contemporary works include Do Ho Suh's fabric installation Some/One and Ai Weiwei's Lego-panel piece Water Lilies #1.
The museum's sculpture garden connects to Volunteer Park and includes Isamu Noguchi's black granite Black Sun (1969), one of Seattle's most photographed public artworks.
