Théodore Géricault painted the military portrait showing a carabinier, a member of the elite French cavalry. The soldier's uniform and bearing reflect the martial pride of Napoleonic France, a subject Géricault returned to throughout his career.
Géricault was fascinated by horses and military subjects before creating his famous Raft of the Medusa. His military paintings combine Romantic drama with careful observation of uniforms and equipment. The work hangs at the Louvre in Paris.
