The Museum Georg Schäfer in Schweinfurt opened in 2000 to house the collection of industrialist Georg Schäfer (1896-1975), one of the most important private collections of 19th-century German painting. The modern building, designed by Volker Staab, was funded by the Schäfer family.
The collection of roughly 900 paintings emphasizes German Romanticism and Realism: Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Spitzweg, Adolph Menzel, and Lovis Corinth are extensively represented. The museum also holds 4,600 works on paper. It's one of the few museums worldwide devoted primarily to 19th-century German art.
