by Alonso Cano
Alonso Cano completed this Visigothic kings as part of a historical series for the Spanish court. The work depicts medieval rulers who governed Spain before the Moorish conquest, rendered in Cano's refined Baroque style. Such historical subjects glorified Spanish heritage and royal lineage.
Cano served as court painter and architect in Madrid, producing both religious and secular works. His elegant figures and soft modeling distinguished him among Spanish Golden Age painters. This painting hangs at the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
