Portinari Triptych

The Portinari Triptych by Hugo van der Goes stands among the greatest achievements of Northern Renaissance painting. Commissioned by Tommaso Portinari, a Medici bank agent in Bruges, this massive altarpiece depicts the Adoration of the Shepherds with unprecedented emotional intensity. The central panel shows the Virgin and angels worshipping the Christ Child, while shepherds rush in with raw, unidealized expressions of wonder.

Van der Goes rendered every surface with extraordinary precision: the flowers in the foreground carry symbolic meaning, the sheaf of wheat prefigures the Eucharist. When the triptych arrived in Florence around 1483, it profoundly influenced Italian artists including Ghirlandaio. The work remains at the Uffizi Gallery.
