Italian artist Annibale Carracci painted this scene inside a butcher shop with life-size figures at work. Carcasses hang while butchers cut and display their wares. The painting treats a humble trade with the dignity of grand art.
Carracci and his family ran an academy that promoted drawing from life. This boldly realistic subject shows their naturalistic philosophy. The work is held at Christ Church, Oxford.
